5 Essential Health Tips for Kids in Back-to-School Season

Happy September!

At the NHIC, we are often asked about the best strategies to keep children healthy, more so during the back-to-school season! With school starting and children returning to their regular routines after a long break, it becomes all the more important to reinforce effective healthy habits. So, here are five tips for preserving our kids’ wellness during this adventurous time of year!

1.Balanced Nutrition is Key

A child's growth and development are primarily influenced by the quality of their nutrition. Encourage a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. These foods provide crucial vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that strengthen immune function and, in turn, promote overall health. Try to limit processed foods and those high in sugar, as they can contribute to energy crashes and weakened immunity.

2. Importance of Hydration

School activities can be hectic and often kids forget to hydrate enough throughout their day. Make sure your child starts their day with a glass of water, has a refillable water bottle for school, and continue hydrating during after-school activities. Proper hydration aids in cognitive function, kidney function, and maintains overall health!

3. Regulate Sleep Schedules

Sleep contributes significantly to a child's health. It aids in growth, boosts immunity, and is critical for concentration and learning. Establish a regular sleep schedule for your kids with 8-10 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night. Also, make sure electronic devices are turned off at least an hour before bed to encourage better sleep.

4. Promote Physical Activity

Physical activity aids in cognitive development, maintains a healthy heart and weight, and helps to relieve stress in children. Encourage at least 60 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity each day. This could be participation in sports, cycling to school, or just playing in the backyard with friends.

5. Teach Stress Management

Back-to-school season can be overwhelming for kids. Equip them with basic stress management techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or practicing mindfulness. Empowering them with these tools at an early age can have long-lasting effects on their mental and emotional health!

Remember, health is multifaceted. It isn’t solely about physical well-being but also involves mental and emotional wellness. By instilling these habits in your kids, you equip them with tools they will use their whole lives. Stay healthy and happy back-to-school season!
